Department of Research


The Department of Applied Research is set up to provide specialized administrative and managerial support for the operation of sponsored research, consultancy and other R&D related activities in the University campus. The research philosophy has progressed from inter- departmental collaboration to international institutional partnerships at National and International levels. The scope and scale of research has substantially evolved from the era of student thesis to funded projects to interdisciplinary research programs at National and International levels. Scheme of Test


The examination will be of Three hours duration and the maximum marks of the test will be 100. There will be one paper consisting of two parts; each part will be of 50 marks. For passing the test the candidate has to score minimum 40% marks in each part separately and minimum 50% marks in aggregate.

The test will be only for judging the eligibility of the candidate for Ph.D. programme. Qualifying the eligibility test will not ensure that the candidate will necessarily be registered as a Ph.D. student.

Validity of the Test


The candidate qualifying the test would be eligible to be invited for the interview for the next one year, such candidates would again submit an application for the exemption from the text along with the relevant certificate, if needed.

Interview

  • The candidates declared qualified in the entrance test and the candidates exempted from entrance test both would be invited for an interview to be conducted by Dean (Research). At the time of Interview by the expert panel the candidates are expected to discuss their research interest/s. The candidate would have to produce the original documents at the time of interview.
  • Only a predetermined number of students shall be admitted to the Ph.D. programme. The University shall follow the rules of the reservation policy in granting such admissions.

Allocation of Supervisor / Co-supervisor
The allocation of the supervisor to a selected student shall be done by the Interview Board keeping in view the number of vacant seats available with faculty members, the available specialization among the faculty supervisors, and the research interest of the student as indicated by him/her during the interview. The allotment/allocation of supervisor shall not be left to the individual student or teacher.

Registration and Synopsis Submission through Supervisor

  • After allocation of supervisor, all candidates for the degree of Ph.D. shall apply for registration in the prescribed application form obtainable from the University on payment of prescribed fee. Application for Ph.D. registration should accompany outline of the proposed research work along with the theme and methodology to be followed, objectives and importance / relevance of the proposed work, bibliography and other details. The candidate will have to deposit the prescribed registration fee and submit the synopsis to the Dean (Research) as per scheduled date.
  • The synopsis would be submitted when it is approved by the supervisor. It is to be submitted through the head of the concerned research center.

Meeting of Subject Research Committee

  • The candidate applying with synopsis for registration for Ph.D. degree, under the allocated supervisor, will have to defend the proposed work before the DRC. Improvement, alteration and modifications suggested by the committee in the synopsis have to be incorporated in and the revised synopsis to be submitted within one month to the Dean (Research).
  • If the outline of the proposed research work is approved, the Dean (Research) shall notify the candidate concerned regarding approval of outline of work and ask him/her to take admission in the institution where he/she plans to work. The candidate shall intimate the date of his/her joining the research to the Dean (Research) through the supervisor and Head of the concerned research center/institute. The date of registration would be the date of admission at this stage.
  • The candidate will be required to submit, through proper channel, his admission report to the University positively within one month of the date of the issue of registration letter.

Course Work
After having been admitted to the Ph.D. programme, each student shall be required to undertake course work for a minimum period of one semester. The course work shall be treated as pre-Ph.D. preparation. It shall include two papers; one shall be on research methodology which shall include quantitative methods and computer applications. The other one shall be an intensive review of available literature/research techniques relating to the proposed research area of the Ph.D. scholar. Candidates undergoing course work are required to obtain a certificate from his/her supervisor with counter-signed by the head of the concerned institution to the effect that he/she has successfully completed the course work. The mode of examination regarding course work would be decided by the Examination Section. The course work will be offered on self- sufficiency basis to the Ph.D. scholars. If found necessary, the courses may be carried out by doctoral candidates in sister departments / institutes either within or outside the university for which due credit will be given to them.

Post - Doctoral


Objective:
The objective of this award is to provide an opportunity to scholars to carry out advanced studies and research in the fields of Sciences, Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Management, Law and Education. The Fellowship will be extended to successful candidates selected by a Selection Committee in consultation with the Departments of relevant discipline on the basis of prescribed selection criteria. Departments may announce every year the number of vacancies for the position of Post Doctoral Fellow and the procedure of selection process. The Fellowship assistance may vary depending on the Research Discipline and will be normally for a period of one year and extendable up to two years. In exceptional cases, the Fellowship tenure may be permitted up to two years depending on the nature of the Research Project. After 2 years, fresh approval will be required.

A Post Doctoral Fellow is an individual holding a doctoral degree who is engaged in a temporary period of mentored research and/or scholarly training. PDF awarded by Sangam University will not lead to any Degree.

The Sangam University Post Doctoral Fellowship (SU-PDF) is aimed to identify motivated young researchers and provide them support for doing research in frontier areas of science and engineering. The fellows will work under a mentor on the project and given some teaching load also to enhance the teaching ability, and it is hoped that this training will provide them a platform to develop as an independent researcher.

Note: University Post-Doctoral Research Degree Board will scrutinize and evaluate the submitted proposal for the candidacy of PDF. Once the proposal is approved, the candidate will be allowed to register for PDF. By paying a semester fee of Rs.36, 000 per semester.

Regulation for Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme

A. Eligibility:

Research Scholars who have completed their Ph.D. or those who have completed their public defense awaiting award of the Degree, with recognized research publications to their credit.

1. The candidate must have a doctorate degree in the relevant subject from Universities/Institutions recognized by UGC/Association of India Universities (AIU), with published research work to their credit. Not more than five years must have lapsed after award of the doctorate.

2. The candidate should have secured a minimum of 55% marks (or equivalent Grade) at UG level and 60% marks (or equivalent Grade) in PG level. In the exceptional case of substantial a number of Research Publications to one’s credit, the minimum prescribed mark/grade may be relaxed by up to 5%.

3. The Candidate must not be more than 42 years of age as on 1 st June of the year of application. The upper age limit may be relaxed up to 45years for women candidates and for SC/ST/OBC/PH/ Minority Community candidates.

4. The Candidate should not be receiving any grant or research assistance by whatever name called from any other source.

5. The Candidate should not be engaged in any part-time or full-time employment of any nature during the entire tenure of Fellowship.

B. Nature & Duration of Support:

The fellowship is tenable only in Sangam University. The Post Doctoral Fellowship will be for the duration of one year (12 months) extendable by one year (12 months) subject to project necessity and satisfactory progress during the completed period as may be assessed and approved by the certifying authority as herein stated.Extension beyond 12 months may be considered in exceptional circumstances if so demanded by the Research Project requirements.

D.  Payment of Fellowship and Contingency Fund Payment of Fellowship will be in arrears at the end of the month. Prescribed claim form duly pre-acknowledged and duly recommended by the Supervisor and endorsed by the Head of the Department and the Dean / Director Research must be submitted every month to the Office of Accounts for all the aforesaid payments. The form must be prepared in triplicate, one copy to remain with the Supervisor and one copy with the Research Section. The payments will be made to the personal bank account of the Scholar. 
E.  Application and Selection Process The selection and appointment of the Post Doctoral Fellow will be based on the available vacancy in the Department/s associated with a funded research project, as may be announced every year in the website of the University. The Research Section in consultation with the concerned will indicate the available/suggested areas of Research. Applications Department online will be invited generally during the months of March and September for the Post Doctoral Research Fellowship to commence from the months of June and December of the following / ongoing academic year. However Post Doctoral Fellow may also be appointed to do independent research on specified areas if so recommended by the Department concerned or by the Research Section of the University. All applications will be online and must be submitted within the specified time limits along with such details and enclosures as may be specified. The Selection will be based on personal interview by the Selection Committee. The Committee will make its recommendation on the basis of curriculum vitae, quality of publications, interview, presentation and such other credentials of the candidate. Successful candidates will be intimated of the selection and the joining date individually. The information will also be posted on the website of the University. No TA/DA will be payable for attending the personal interview. The selected candidate will be issued letter of appointment as Post Doctoral Fellow in the prescribed format. The Selection Committee may be constituted by the Research Section under the guidance of President/VC and will include the Head of the Department (HOD), the Dean of the Faculty, the nominee Supervisor and the Dean/Director Research.
F.  Supervision and Progress Report  The Post Doctoral Fellow (PDF) and his/her research project shall be mentored by a Supervisor identified by the Department and approved by the Directed of Research. The Supervisor shall be a permanent faculty member of the Department and shall have research experience in the project related disciplines. The Supervisor will oversee the PDF in all his/her work performance and progress of research including for administrative compliances. The PDF will be required to submit a Progress Report in the prescribed format and make a presentation either quarterly or half-yearly as may be decided by the Supervisor in consultation with the Dean / Director Research. Copy of the Progress Report with the comments of the Supervisor and the HOD must be sent to the Directed of Research. On satisfactory completion of the Research and subject to its due assessment and/or publications, the Scholar will be awarded the Certificate of Post Doctoral Research indicating the specific title of the research project. All Research findings and Publications, Monographs, Patents etc relating to the Research Project must be affiliated to and shall remain the property of the Sangam University.
G.  Code of Conduct/Obligations of Post Doctoral Fellow
a.   PDF will be bound by the General Code of Conduct applicable to all Staff of the University as specified in the Staff Hand Book and must uphold the Vision, Mission and Core Values of the University in their work ethics. Any breach of this obligation shall be misconduct.
b. The PDF must be a full time researcher and must subscribe to the regulations of the University with regular attendance. PDF will be allotted a dedicated personal email id by the University which should be the principal contact for all official communications. The attendance norms for PDF will be as applicable to the full time faculty members of the University and the will be monitored by the Office of HR.
c. The PDF is not permitted to take any paid or unpaid assignment within or outside the University without written permission of the University. Permission may be granted only in exceptional circumstances of adding value to the approved research program and will be on such terms and conditions as may be specified.
d. The PDF shall administratively report to the Supervisor and shall submit the Research Progress Report to the University in the prescribed format at such interval as may be specified.
e. The PDF will not be entitled for any leave other than on account of any specific emergency as may be approved by the Supervisor and the Head of the Department. Such emergency leave shall not normally be permitted for more than 7 days in a year. Any absence from work for attending duly approved Seminars or Conferences, Field work etc will be treated as ‘on duty’ provided such absence does not exceed 15 days in a year. Unauthorized absence from work will not be permitted as leave and will be a deemed misconduct. All leave details must be pre-informed to the Director Research. The PDF will not be entitled for any Vacation applicable to University faculties.
f. The PDF is supposed to complete the Research Work in full within the approved or extended time duration. In the event of discontinuation or non-completion of the project as required, the PDF will be under obligation to refund such portion of the Fellowship amounts and other grants collected, as may be determined by the University. The amount due from the PDF if not paid on demand will be recovered through applicable/appropriate legal process including public notice.
g. The PDF as part of his/her research fellowship, with a view to enhance research related interaction shall be required to engage in related teaching /learning responsibility as may be assigned by the Supervisor in consultation with the HOD and the Director of Centre for Research (PhD) for a duration of not exceeding 6 Hours per week. No such assignment shall include any departmental co-curricular/extra-curricular activities.
h. The PDF may be issued with an Identity cum Smart Card as for students/faculty of the University which must be retained/carried by the PDF at all times during his/her tenure of research for verification by any of the Authorities of the University. The Card must be surrendered to the University on conclusion of the Research Project.
i. The Identity cum Smart Card will entitle the PDF to have access to the Libraries/Knowledge Centre and online resources of the University and to borrow books, journals etc with privileges similar to that for Research Students (MPhil/PhD) of the University. Any unauthorized or improper use of the Card/Library Resources will be deemed misconduct.
j. PDF has to submit a satisfactory project report & publications to the supervisor & Director Research on its completion.
H.  Cancellation of the Appointment / Fellowship
The appointment of PDF and the Fellowship liable to be cancelled at any time in the following circumstances:

  • The PDF directly or indirectly commits or becomes a party to any misconduct or is in breach of any of the obligations under this Regulation.
  • The PDF is involved in any Criminal Proceedings.
  • The PDF has secured the appointment by mis-representation of any of the material information and/or by fraudulent act.
  • Willful and continuing neglect of Research work or unsatisfactory progress in Research or unauthorized and prolonged absence from work.
  • Willful disobedience of or indifference to the Supervisor.
  • University decides to discontinue the Research by giving one months notice in writing.

In the event of cancellation of the Fellowship except under (f) above the candidate shall refund the fellowship amounts and grants drawn under the scheme as provided under Para G (f).


I.  Eligibility of Supervisor  Supervisor of a Post Doctoral Fellow must have the following qualifications and credentials.


a. Must be a full time confirmed Assistant Professor (of at least Scale II) of the University.


b. Must be a qualified PhD in the relevant discipline with at least five years of teaching/research post qualification experience at Post Graduate level.


c. Must have done at least three recognized publications (other than PhD related)


e. Must be either guiding or be eligible for guiding PhD candidates of the University. Number of the PhD candidates under guidance should not exceed five.


I.  Eligibility of Department

The Department to be eligible to have Post Doctoral Fellow/s must have the following pre-requisites:

  • Must be offering PhD Programme.
  • Must have at least one Professor and one Associate Professor.
  • Must have a Research Committee / assigned faculty involved in independent research.

Doctor of Science (D.Sc.), Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) and Doctor of Laws (LL.D.)
The Doctor of Science (D.Sc.), Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) and Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) are the highest post-doctoral degrees of the university. The university shall award D.Sc. Degree in the disciplines of Science, Engineering, Technology, and other related areas; D.Litt. in the disciplines of Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, Design, Creative Arts and other related areas; LL.D. in the discipline of Law and other related areas to a candidate whose work and research have made distinct contributions to the advancement of knowledge.

Eligibility for D. Sc.
A candidate who is awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in the disciplines of Science, Engineering, Technology and other related areas by this university or degree recognized equivalent thereto from any other university may present his/her candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) provided he/she must have: Done post-doctoral work in Science, Engineering, Technology and other related areas for a minimum period of 5 years and have published two books, 30 research papers in SCI journals / Scopus indexed journals / International Journals of repute as first or corresponding author, attended at least four conferences / seminars and have h-index more than 10.

Post Ph.D. experience of more than 5 years in Science, Engineering, Technology and other related areas, 2 patents (at least 1 international patent) in a relevant discipline and his/her research work and efforts should have national and international recognition and have made a distinct contribution to the society and advancement of knowledge.

Eligibility for D.Litt.

A candidate who is awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in the disciplines of Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, Design, Creative Arts and other related areas by this University or degree recognized equivalent thereto from any other University may present his/her candidacy for the Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) provided that he/she:

Done post-doctoral work in Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, Design, Creative Arts and other related areas for a minimum period of 5 years and has published two books, 30 research papers in Scopus indexed journals / International journals of repute as first author or corresponding author, attended at least four conferences / seminars and have h-index more than 10.

Eligibility for LL.D.

A candidate who is awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in the discipline of Law and related areas by this University or degree recognized equivalent thereto from any other University may present his/her candidacy for the Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) provided that he/she has:

Minimum 5 years post Ph.D. teaching experience and has published two books, 30 research papers in Scopus indexed journals / International journals of repute as first author or corresponding author, attended at least four conferences/seminars and should also have h-index more than 10.

Note: No supervisor is required but advisor is required and all the work carried out during the course should be authentic with minimum 5 publications in which minimum 3 with university name in SCI Journals is mandatory with one patent/copyright during the period for each course. Any relaxation is given on the direction of President / VC only.

University Post-Doctoral Research Degree Board will scrutinize and evaluate the submitted proposal for the candidacy of D.Sc./ D.Litt./ LL.D. Once the proposal is approved, the candidate will be allowed to register for D.Sc. / D.Litt. / LL.D. by paying a semester fee of Rs.70, 000 per semester.
